One of the largest worms ever seen – Downadup

A new worm, is spreading rapidly on the internet, Downadup or Conficker, which has an exponential growth in numbers of infected computers. As of last friday, more than 8 million computers have been infected. So far this is largest outbreak we have seen in many years, says Mikko H. Hyppönen, Chief Reserach Officer at F-Secure. “The situation with Downadup is not getting better. It’s getting worse.”

The worm is right now not causing any harm, but it’s of the type of “phone home” that can download an attack in the near future, that could cause financial gain. It seems that the worm origins from Ukraine.

The Downadup or Conficker worm exploits a bug in Microsoft Windows to infect mainly corporate networks, where — although it has yet to cause any harm — it potentially exposes infected PCs to hijack. Microsoft have issued a patch for this, which is available for download
